The 38 Rock Art Sites of the Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape

The Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is exactly that; a 'landscape' of prehistoric rock art within the widely distributed karst landforms which the Zuojiang River and its branch meander through, for over 100 kilometers. Whilst the Huashan Rock Art Site is the most spectacular, the fact that there are 38 designated sites for the prehistoric paintings demonstrates the uniqueness and scale of the Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape.

Chenxiangjiao Rock Art Site

The environment is integral to the paintings; mountains, river and terraces. The rock art sites, numbering 38, are almost all located on the bend of the river and opposite flat cultivated terraces, occupying consistent painting sites in terms of height and cliff position. Most paintings face south or west. The surrounding archaeology, with evidence from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic, is consistent with the distribution of the rock art paintings.

The division of rock art sites - the First Heritage Area, Ningming County, the Second Heritage Area, Longzhou County, and the Third heritage Area, Jiangzhou District, Fusui County - follows the division method described in the Investigation and Research on Rock Art of Guangxi Zoujiang River Basin published by Guangxi Nationalities Publishing House in 1987.

1	Zhushan Rock Art Site	Zhushan consists of a panel roughly 400m. wide, with 167 anthropomorphs, 8 zoomorphs and 24 circular images. Listed under Ningming County's Protection Unit of Cultural Relics in 1993 and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region's Protection Unit of Cultural Relics in 2014.
2	Longxiashan Rock Art Site	Longxiashan consists of 2 panels; the first 20m. wide at a height of 65m. with 12 anthropomorphs, and the second 25m. wide at a height of 60m. with 41 anthropomorphs, 4 zoomorphs and 5 circular images. Listed under Ningming County's Protection Unit of Cultural Relics in 1993 and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region's Protection Unit of Cultural Relics in 2014.
3	Gaoshan Rock Art Site	Gaoshan paintings consist of 316 anthropomorphs (228 in profile), 15 zoomorphs and 46 circular images. Listed under Ningming County's Protection Unit of Cultural Relics in 1993 and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region's Protection Unit of Cultural Relics in 2014.
4	Huashan Rock Art Site	Huashan paintings are at height of 10m. to 90m. with a panel 172m. wide - 8,000 sq.m. - with over 1,800 images, 1,500 of which are anthropomorphs (largest figure 3m. in height) Listed under Important Units of Cultural Relics under the National Protection by the State Council in 1988 and the World Heritage Tentative List in China by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage in 2007.

7	Shuiyanshan Rock Art Site	Shuiyanshan paintings are at a height of 50m. with 7 indistinct anthropomorphs (profiles) and marks. Listed under Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region's Protection Unit of Cultural Relics in 2014.
8	Duimianshan Rock Art Site	Duimianshan paintings are in 2 groups, firstly at a height of 150m. with 14 anthropomorphs and 1 circular image, and secondly at a height of 105m. with 17 anthropomorphs and 1 circular image.
