The Rock Art of Huashan Gallery presents the many facets that go to make up one of the greatest prehistoric painted panels in the world. Huashan is unique; while the rock art may not be the oldest, and while the paintings are highly standardised, with only a few motif types depicted in monochrome, there is no other prehistoric rock art site quite like Huashan. The Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, unfolding along the Zuojiang River valley of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with 38 specific rock sites, represents a prehistoric package of cosmological beliefs; a package that combines the three elements – sky, water and earth - that were central to the local ethnic culture. Clearly, the effort people made to paint the magnificent images by taking high risks climbing the precipitous cliffs cannot have been driven by mundane needs; the current documentation and preservation of the rock art of Huashan will ensure that such efforts of the past will survive into the future.
