Museo de Altamira - Opens today

A word from Museo de Altamira:

"The Times of Altamira" is the name chosen to name the permanent exhibition rooms, which together with the neocueva hall, are dedicated to the culture and art of the groups of hunters and gatherers during the period we know as upper Paleolithic, between about 40,000 years and 12,000 years ago.

The cave of Altamira, renowned for its Upper Palaeolithic paintings & charcoal drawings, is located near Santillana del Mar in Cantabria, northern Spain. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

In its journey we will be able to observe more than 450 original archaeological objects, coming not only from the cave of Altamira but from one of the main sites of the region such as the caves of El Castillo, La Pila or Rascaño, accompanied by additional information that we talk about its manufacturing technique or function - because through paleolithic objects we rebuild how the people behind Altamira's art were, and their way of life.

'The Times of Altamira' was a research program initiated by the Museum in 2003 to thoroughly examine the archaeology of Altamira, both inside and out.

We will know the physical appearance and skills developed, the activities of #Cotidian Life: hunting, fishing, collecting, cooking and food, dress or personal ornament. And, of course, the #Paleolithic cantabrian, cave and furniture, its diversity of techniques, styles, themes and chronology, whose wealth has been recognized as it is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

And sooner or later, we can't stop visiting the area dedicated to telling the beginning of everything: the discovery of the cave of Altamira by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, which meant the recognition of the existence of our First Art. So plan your visit thinking that the Altamira Museum is much more than the #Neocueva.
