For the 2021 Heritage Days, the departmental site of the Abbey of Arthous is organizing a round table on the prehistoric horse sculptures discovered in 1961 by the researcher Robert Arambourou at the Duruthy shelter in the town of Sorde-l'Abbaye.

These mammoth stone and ivory sculptures are currently visible in a new room on the permanent route of Arthous Abbey inaugurated in 2020 - the treasury room - and are the subject, in 2021, of a temporary exhibition by photographs taken by Claire Artemyz entitled Au grand galop: Duruthy and the art of origins.

Installed in the church, the round table will bring together several archaeologists specializing in Prehistory (Mrs Morgane Dachary and Messrs. Jean-Claude Merlet, Clément Birouste and Aurélien Simonet) as well as the photographer Claire Artemyz in order to better understand the specificity of these precious sculptures dated around 17,000 years old.

They will share with the public the history of the discovery of these sculptures, but also the state of knowledge concerning the Magdalenian of the Pyrenees, as well as the current research carried out by the University of Toulouse on these objects.

Moderator: Mr. Jean-Jacques Taillentou , historian and author, specialist in the history of the Landes, President of the Société de Borda from 2009 to 2019.

Ms. Morgane Dachary , Engineer at the regional archeology service of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and associate researcher at UMR 5608-TRACES at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès.

Mr. Jean-Claude Merlet , President of the Archaeological Research Center on the Landes (CRAL) and Director of the last scheduled archaeological excavations (2014-2017) of Grand Pastou, one of the prehistoric shelters of Sorde-l'Abbaye.

Mr. Clément Birouste , Associate researcher at UMR 5608-TRACES at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès.

Mr. Aurélien Simonet, Heritage conservation officer at the Landes Department and associate researcher at UMR 5608-TRACES at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès.
