Twyfelfontein - A Survey into the Relationship between Animal-Engravings & Cupules

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I am grateful to a number of people who helped me with the completion of this work, but I am especially indebted to two colleagues. First of all I would like to thank Sven Ouzman, at that time head of the Rock Art Department, Bloemfontein, South Africa, for his encouragement to write this essay and for his most useful comments and information regarding southern African rock-art and ethnography. Sven also supplied me with several hard copies of most useful publications throughout the years, which enabled me to postulate many of the ideas in this work. Sven also offered most critical but ever-useful comments on several drafts of this work. Last but not least, Sven made available his on-site report carried out during March 2002 for the National Monuments Council of Namibia, and kindly allowed me to use it and include it here as Appendix 2, together with a number of photographs taken by him during his survey in 2002.

The second colleague I owe much to, is Ulrich Hallier of Düsseldorf University, Germany, who helped me in every way he could by supplying me with books, copies of several papers, many photographs, useful addresses, and, last but not least, specific information on northern African rock-art. Ulrich also was so kind to read and comment on the parts dealing with northern African rock-art. It must be emphasised here, however, that all information and the non-quoted ideas presented in this work are completely my responsibility (except for the contents of the Site Report by Sven Ouzman).

I am also grateful to Leone Allard-Huard, Tilman Lensen Erz, Salomé Visser for help and advice on several aspects. Last but not least I would like to thank my wife Elles who helped me enormously, as usual, during the surveys in Namibia in July 2001. All photographs and illustrations are made by me or my wife Elles, unless otherwise stated in the list of captions.
