Upper Brandberg, Namibia - May/June 2012
This expedition was organised at the instigation of a number of friends who wished to see the rock art sites of the Upper Brandberg, but lacked the physical stamina necessary for the very tough treks normally required to reach the sites. We chartered a Bell 206B Jet Ranger from Expedite Aviation for the entire duration of our six day stay on the mountain, very skillfully and professionally piloted by Stefan Michaelis. Following the initial ascent, the helicopter re-joined us every other day to re-supply and move us to the next camp, then down the mountain on the last day. The expedition began in Windhoek, with the first campsite at Fish River Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world. Once on the Brandberg, the first objective was the 'Giant's Shelter' site, situated a short climb above our camp, the single largest shelter with paintings.
