Engraved drawing of two deer Sculptures of the Ice Age
Discovered in 1840, this piece of prepared bone from the front leg of a reindeer is thought to be roughly 14,000 years old. The two does are well composed and depicted, and were created by scraping and polishing. The space between and below the deer is rougher, perhaps providing an illusion of landscape and perspective.

From Le Chaffaud Cave, France.

Prepared bone.

Musée d'Archéologie nationale, Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Paris.
