The prehistoric rock carvings of Zaouia Tahtania, 18 km south of Taghit, in the region of Béchar in southwestern Algeria, have been seriously damaged by tourists. The engravings, which date back more than 5,000 years, were stained with paint as well as the rock being directly damaged. Modern graffiti has been engraved beside or on the Neolithic petroglyphs.

At the Zaouia Tahtania rock art site, there are engravings of animals such as antelopes, horses, elephants, gazelles, giraffes, camels and ostriches, as well as geometrical symbols and human forms. The depictions represent an ancient existence based on the presence of water in the Zousfana valley.

The rock art site today suffers from several kinds of degradation. There are no fences or guardians. There are traces of occasional merchants in the form of litter. The site is filthy.
