The two engraved giraffe, the largest of which is over 5 metres in length from top to bottom, are thought to be between 8,000 and 6,000 years old. The site was listed by UNESCO in 2,000 as one of the world’s most endangered monuments, based on the exceptional quality of the rock art. The giraffe pair clearly dominate the outcrop at Dabous, but a subsequent archaeological survey carried out by the Bradshaw Foundation and led by Dr Jean Clottes revealed over 800 hundred hundred smaller yet no less significant petroglyph carvings.

The Ténéré Desert, the desert within the Sahara Desert, comprises a vast plain of sand stretching from north-eastern Niger into western Chad, covering an area of 400,000 square kilometres, with the Aïr Mountains as boundaries in the west, the Hoggar Mountains in the north, the Tibesti Mountains in the east, and the basin of Lake Chad in the south. The Ténéré Desert is the locus of the prehistoric Tenerian culture, and whilst the Tuareg - with their historic customs and culture - are the current custodians of this region, evidence of prehistoric culture in the form of rock art and archaeological artefacts is abundant.
